This projects aim was to design and build a portable substitute for a high-quality acoustic drum kit. The project was led by research and experimentation. This centred around finding the right combination of production equipment and technique in the hopes of replicating the tonal qualities of drum sounds found in influential records from the past century.
Many records were examined for research, in particular records from artists such as Wendy Rene and Carla Thomas, which led to the discovery of their home label, Stax records. This example was particularly interesting, with much of their musical legacy being well documented, especially on how the label developed its own characteristic sound. This was primarily through to their unique recording environment and fail-safe recording techniques. Records such as ‘Amen Brother’, ‘Funky Drummer’, ‘Hey Last minute’ were also used as points of tonal reference, due to their drum breaks which have formed the basis for many modern subgenres of music such as drum and bass and jungle.
